Congratulations to the Sea Colony Beach Patrol for top performances this summer at regional and national ocean lifeguard tournaments. 

Sea Colony took home 1st place at the 2010 USLA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships held in Ocean City, Md., and Long Branch, N.J. in July. 

In August, Sea Colony teamed up with several other Sussex County beach patrols to take 2nd place at the 2010 USLA National Lifesaving Championships, held at Huntington Beach, Calif. Team Sussex County edged out Monmouth County, N.J. for the first time ever and finished behind L.A. County, Calif., during the three-day competition.  Events covered land and ocean races, with and without surf rescue equipment.  

National tournament results were: 

• Leah Ciekot placed 5th in the open women’s paddle, 6th in the open women’s beach flags, 10th in the open women’s paddle rescue, 12th in the open women’s International Ironwoman, and 10th in the open women’s surf ski;
• Jamie Jones placed 4th in the open women’s surf rescue race, 10th in the open women’s 2k beach run, 7th in the open women’s paddle rescue, and 4th in the open women’s 4×100 sprint;
• Cindy Fajardo placed 1st in 400m surf swim, 1st in run-swim-run, 2nd  in paddle, 5th in surf ski, 2nd in American Ironwoman, 2nd in 2k beach run, 2nd in beach flags, 11th in the International Ironwoman; and
• Dave Griffith placed 1st in American Ironman, 2nd in the Surf Boat, 3rd in International Ironman, 3rd in paddle, 4th in surf ski, and 5th in run-swim-run.

“I am very proud of this accomplishment, we would like to thank all of you for all of your support this year,” Griffith said.

“President Barack Obama signed a $24 billion economic stimulus bill into law Friday, giving tax incentives to prospective homebuyers and additional jobless benefits to those idled by the business slump.

“The bill-signing came a day after the House, displaying rare bipartisan agreement over the troubling employment picture nationally, voted 403-12 to pass the measure. The Senate had approved it unanimously on Wednesday.

“The tax credits, added by the Senate, center on extending the popular $8,000 credit for first-time homebuyers that was included in the stimulus package. The credit, which was to expire at the end of this month, will be available through next June as long as the buyer signs a binding contract by the end of April.

“The program is expanded to include a $6,500 credit for existing homeowners who buy a new place after living in their current residence for at least five years.”

“Buying a home is about to get cheaper for a whole new crop of homebuyers – $6,500 cheaper.

“First-time homebuyers have been getting tax credits of up to $8,000 since January as part of the economic stimulus package enacted earlier this year. But with the program scheduled to expire at the end of November, the House voted 403-12 Thursday to extend and expand the tax credit to include many buyers who already own homes. The Senate approved the measure Wednesday, and President Barack Obama is expected to sign it.

“Buyers who have owned their current homes at least five years would be eligible for tax credits of up to $6,500. First-time homebuyers – or anyone who hasn’t owned a home in the last three years – would still get up to $8,000. To qualify, buyers in both groups have to sign a purchase agreement by April 30, 2010, and close by June 30.”

“The legislation, recognizing the lingering distresses of the recession, passed the Senate Wednesday on a 98-0 vote and could come up in the House as early as Thursday, sending it to President Barack Obama for his signature.

“It would also extend for seven months an $8,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers that was enacted as part of the $787 billion stimulus package passed last February and is set to expire at the end of this month. The program would be expanded with a $6,500 credit for homebuyers who have lived in their current residences for five years.”

“While many municipalities in recent months have restructured their recycling service or changed their curbside recycling provider, or are considering doing so, people outside of town limits who are not curbside recycling customers now have a new drop-off site to use.

“A new DSWA single-stream recycling center opened in September at the Delaware State Park’s Fresh Pond area. … In addition to batteries, the single-stream drop-off center accepts items such as narrow-necked plastic bottles; paperboard; aluminum, steel and empty aerosol cans; junk mail; newspaper; plastic grocery bags; and brown, green and clear glass. Recyclers can also bring their corrugated cardboard to the site.

“The Fresh Pond recycling drop-off is located north of Bethany Beach, off Route 1, just north of Fred Hudson Road, across from Ocean Village. For those heading northbound, the entrance can be reached from the first crossover north of Fred Hudson Road, at the entrance to the Delmarva Power substation.”
